Bumthang

The spiritual heartland of Bhutan

About Bumthang

Comprising four wide valleys — Chumey, Choekhor, Tang and Ura — Bumthang is considered the spiritual heart of the nation, home to some of its oldest and most sacred temples. Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang both date back to the 7th century and are associated with Guru Rinpoche, who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. Beyond temples, Bumthang is known for buckwheat fields, apple orchards, honey and locally made cheese, with a noticeably different rural character from the western valleys.
