Phobjikha Valley

A glacial valley and winter home of the black-necked crane

About Phobjikha Valley

Phobjikha is a wide, U-shaped glacial valley on the western slopes of the Black Mountains, designated a protected area for its role as the wintering ground of the rare and endangered black-necked crane. The valley is dominated by Gangtey Monastery, one of the most important Nyingma monasteries in Bhutan. With no electricity lines crossing the valley floor (to protect the cranes), Phobjikha retains an unspoiled, pastoral atmosphere — ideal for gentle nature walks and rural homestays.
