Western Bhutan
Thimphu
Bhutan's quirky, traffic-light-free capital
About Thimphu
Thimphu is one of the world's only capital cities without a single traffic light, where traditional architecture sits alongside government buildings and a growing café scene. The Buddha Dordenma statue gazes over the valley, while Tashichho Dzong houses the offices of the King and central monastic body. Despite being the political and commercial heart of Bhutan, Thimphu retains a small-town feel — weekend markets, archery grounds, and the Memorial Chorten remain at the centre of daily life.
