Eastern Bhutan
Mongar
Gateway to eastern Bhutan
About Mongar
Reached via the dramatic Thrumshing La pass — Bhutan's highest motorable road at 3,750m — Mongar marks the transition into eastern Bhutan's warmer, greener landscapes. The town's modern dzong, built in the 1930s, is one of the few in Bhutan constructed without the traditional use of nails. Mongar serves as a natural stopover for travellers heading further east to Trashigang and Trashiyangtse, with terraced fields, orange groves and a noticeably more relaxed pace.
