About Wangdue Phodrang

Just east of Punakha, Wangdue Phodrang dzongkhag marks the gateway from western to central Bhutan, with the rebuilt Wangdue Phodrang Dzong overlooking the confluence of the Punak Tsang Chhu. It is the largest dzongkhag by area, encompassing both the Phobjikha glacial valley further north and warmer lowland villages to the south. This geographic variety makes it one of the most diverse regions in the country, from alpine crane habitat to subtropical farmland.
