Paro Tshechu — Festival of the Dragon Kingdom

The Paro Tshechu is one of the most extraordinary events in the Himalayan world — a five-day sacred festival held each spring in the courtyard of Paro's ancient fortress monastery, where monks and laymen perform the Cham, a tradition of mask dance that has been passed down without interruption for centuries. Each dance is a living scripture: stories of Guru Rinpoche, the deities who protect the dharma, and the eternal contest between wisdom and ignorance, rendered in painted masks, richly embroidered robes and precise choreography before thousands of gathered Bhutanese. Before dawn on the final morning, the great Thongdrel — a silk appliqué thangka the size of a building — is unfurled from the dzong wall for the last time before being rolled away for another year. Bhutanese believe that seeing it, even for a moment, purifies a lifetime of accumulated karma. This itinerary is built around attending the Paro Tshechu as its centrepiece, and also takes in the finest cultural sights of western Bhutan: Thimphu, Punakha Dzong, the glacial Phobjikha valley and Tiger's Nest — so that the festival lands in its full cultural context rather than in isolation.
