Thimphu Tshechu — A Spiritual Spectacle Beyond the Ordinary

Introduced in 1670 by the fourth temporal ruler Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye, the Thimphu Tshechu is one of Bhutan's grandest religious festivals — three days of sacred Cham dances performed in the courtyard of Tashichho Dzong, honouring Guru Rinpoche and the triumph of Buddhist teaching over ignorance. Thousands of Bhutanese travel to the capital for the occasion, filling the dzong courtyard in their finest kira and gho, and the festival closes with the pre-dawn unfurling of a great Thongdrel — a sacred appliqué thangka believed to bestow blessings and liberation on all who see it. This itinerary builds the festival into a complete journey through western Bhutan: the capital's monuments, the glacial Phobjikha valley and its black-necked cranes, the fortress dzong of Punakha, and a final climb to Tiger's Nest above Paro.
