Best Time to Visit Bhutan

Bhutan's mountainous terrain means weather varies significantly by altitude and season. Here's a season-by-season breakdown to help you choose the best time for your trip.

Spring (March - May)

Widely considered the best time to visit. Rhododendrons and magnolias bloom across the hillsides, skies are generally clear, and temperatures are mild (10-20°C in the valleys). This is also festival season — the famous Paro Tshechu usually falls in March or April.

Summer / Monsoon (June - August)

Warm and lush, but with frequent rainfall, especially in the afternoons. Landscapes are at their greenest, and this is a quieter, lower-cost period — good for travellers who don't mind carrying a rain jacket and don't need guaranteed mountain views.

Autumn (September - November)

The second peak season, with crisp, clear skies offering the best Himalayan views of the year. October and November are popular for the Punakha Tshechu, Black-Necked Crane Festival in Phobjikha, and Jambay Lhakhang Drup in Bumthang.

Winter (December - February)

Cold, especially at night (can drop below freezing in Thimphu and Paro), but daytime skies are often brilliantly clear. This is the best time to see the black-necked cranes in Phobjikha and to enjoy Bhutan with fewer crowds. Higher passes may occasionally close after snowfall.
