Bhutan's climate varies dramatically with altitude and season — layering is the key to packing well, whether you're sightseeing in Thimphu or trekking over a high mountain pass.
Clothing
- Layered clothing: t-shirts, fleece/sweater, and a warm jacket (even in summer, evenings can be cool)
- Waterproof/windproof outer layer, especially June-September
- Comfortable trousers — modest clothing for monastery visits (avoid shorts/sleeveless tops)
- Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots with good grip (essential for Tiger's Nest hike)
- Sun hat and sunglasses (UV is strong at altitude)
- Warm hat, gloves and thermal layers for winter (Dec-Feb) or high-altitude treks
Health & Toiletries
- Personal medications plus a basic first-aid kit
- Altitude sickness medication (consult your doctor before travel)
- Sunscreen (high SPF) and lip balm
- Hand sanitiser and wet wipes
- Rehydration salts
Travel Essentials
- Original passport + printed visa clearance letter
- Travel insurance documents (with medical evacuation cover, especially for trekking trips)
- Universal power adapter (Bhutan uses Type D/G/F sockets, 230V)
- Cash in USD or INR for personal expenses (ATMs are limited outside major towns)
- Reusable water bottle (reduce plastic waste)
For Trekking Trips
- Four-season sleeping bag (rentals available)
- Trekking poles
- Headlamp/torch with spare batteries
- Quick-dry trekking clothes and moisture-wicking socks
- Daypack for carrying essentials during the day
What NOT to bring
