Bhutan's mountainous terrain means road journeys can take longer than the distance suggests — but the drives themselves are part of the experience, winding through forests, terraced fields and over high passes.
Private vehicle transport
All IVH Bhutan packages include a private vehicle with an experienced driver and an English-speaking licensed guide. This is by far the most common and comfortable way to travel between dzongkhags, with flexibility to stop for photos, viewpoints and local encounters.
Domestic flights
Bhutan has domestic airports in Paro, Bumthang (Bathpalathang), Gelephu and Yongphula (near Trashigang). Domestic flights with Drukair or Bhutan Airlines can save significant driving time on longer itineraries — for example, flying Paro-Bumthang instead of a 7-8 hour drive. We can arrange these on request for an additional fee.

Road conditions
Most major routes between dzongkhags are paved but narrow and winding, often hugging steep hillsides. Landslides and roadworks can occasionally cause delays, particularly during the monsoon (June-August). Our drivers are highly experienced on these roads and itineraries build in reasonable travel times.
Within towns
Thimphu and Paro have local taxis, though most of our guests rely on their private vehicle throughout the trip. Walking is a great way to explore compact town centres like Thimphu's main street and Paro's old town.
Trekking logistics
For trekking packages, transport switches to foot, supported by pack animals (yaks/horses/mules) and a dedicated camping crew who set up camp ahead of the group — all included in your package.
